Crashes When Offline!

With latest version, app crashes when offline, immediately after attempting to open a previously downloaded issue. Makes the app useless for reading on subway, plane, or wherever theres no connection. Please fix!!

Please fix

Please, please, please fix. I have a nation subscription that I cannot use because the app crashes every time I try to open an issue. This has not been working for months. It is more than about time you released an update that fixes the problem.

Cant activate at all. Worst magazine app ever

App wont let me register. Customer service rep couldnt help at all. She rudely told me that IT was not available and condescendingly explained " theres a time difference between east and west coasts", and stated that I should try later in the week!! Cancelling my subscription

Disappointed

Love the Nation magazine. Great writing and all. But this app is constantly crashing. Please find some great app gurus to fix this. Not worth a star unfortunately.

A disgusting app

I purchased the subscription but app showed none i tried to contact customer service but received zero response. I should have trust the reviews here. This app is disgusting. Save yourself from a bad headache, dont download it and do not subscribe to the magazine.

Sadly, the worlds most valuable opinion journal has the worst app

I have been a print and/or digital subscriber to The Nation for decades. I cherish it. This review is intended to be constructive. Im also a very tech savvy person. This app is an embarrassment. It can be usable for a while but from time to time the account system goes nuts, and I am no longer able to access new content. Emails with tech support etc have at least on one occasion led to a restoration of my ability to log in. But here I sit, once again, unable to sign in to my account. It appears the problem is more with the server than with the app. While were at it, here are other complaints I have about this app: - No variable text size. The pages are preformatted and I have no control. Every other civilized news or magazine app I have used (e.g. Harpers, The New Yorker, The Economist, The New York Times) has this feature. - No landscape view!!!! Ive never seen this problem on any reading app. An "icon" appears ordering me to rotate my iPad or iPhone! This is a flagrant violation of modern human interface and mobile app design principles. - No dictionary support. Apparently The Nation app uses nonstandard text display, so Im unable to select a word for dictionary lookup. - No scrolling view. The text is formatted into "pages" and one must skip from one to the next. Some other apps, notably The NY Times, do have this same flaw. Overall it appears to me that the job of developing this app was relegated to the graphics department, as the overall philosophy appears to be trying to force a mobile device to behave like a print magazine. This theory is also supported by the fact that whoever is in charge is not current on mobile app technology and has produced an inferior and unreliable accounts system. Thanks for listening, The Nation.

Great publication poor digital presentation

Also you cant remove issues if you try (option under hear icon) the app crashes. Have to delete app and all issues to save space. If this worked Id give this 2 stars

No app for me.

I like the publication, but after reading these reviews, I will be deleting the app.

Awful App

If I could give the app no stars I would. This is an atrocious update. I have been a reader of the Nation for decades, but with this new travesty of an app I am no longer - not out of choice, but because it wont let me log in. The instructions for verifying a subscription with the new app if the subscription was obtained through iTunes require me to hit "done" and "library" from my account page, neither of which are even on the page. Checking on the web I see that the app can be used if the subscription is through the magazine directly, but those subscribers have additional features available to them. If youre an iTunes subscriber I guess you have neither these added features nor even the magazine. What a deal! Update September 14, 2016 I called The Nation. The person I spoke with seemed to know nothing about the continuing problems through the iTunes app with an iTunes subscription. Because I have an iTunes subscription, I was left with no resolution, just a referral to the Nation tech department. This happened when I called earlier this year. I regret now subscribing in January. If you are considering subscribing DONT, at least not through iTunes. ****** Hello? HELLO? Is anyone there? Does anyone in the tech department read these reviews? I dropped my iTunes subscription a few months ago due to this lousy app. I recently resubscribed for an online subscription. I thought the app would be fixed by now. Ha! I am still told my magazine might not format correctly to work with version 5.7. It was doing that when I dropped the iTunes subscription. Fortunately, with an online subscription I can access a PDF version. Nation Magazine, tear down this app! Build a new one.

Not too bad

I have a print subscription, and just created a user id and password online using a desktop computer and the web interface. Then I downloaded the app onto my iPad and logged in. The whole process was strange and unwieldy, but I was successful. The app appears to be designed for use only when connected to wifi. It seems to download pieces of the magazine on demand instead of downloading the whole thing. Navigation is also peculiar, but I have been able to figure it out. I am a software engineer and very familiar with the peculiarities of web and app interfaces, so maybe I have less trouble than most would. I view every strange user interface with suspicion and the expectation that it will be fragile. I must say, I would rather read the print issue. If I can figure out how to get entire issues downloaded at once instead of piecemeal, I might try to use it to read offline.

Terrible App

Very poorly written app. As much as I like The Nation, I would counsel everyone to stay away from this piece of garbage.

Incompatible with its own content

This is the worst of hundreds of iPhone apps that I have used. Its content is always the "wrong version" even though the user has no control over versions. It cannot be used offline. There are no usable bookmarks. Jumping from contents to an article often lands on an ad; the article cannot be found. The magazine is top notch and deserves a better platform on the iPhone. I will not be renewing my iTunes subsciption.

Breathtakingly Bad...

Where to begin... The issue format is different than the app, I know this because a warning pops up every time I open an issue. You cant read issues offline. When offline, the app closes itself. When downloading an issue, you have to keep the app open, if it closes, it stops downloading. As good as the Nation is, this app is as bad.

Beware!

This app is poorly designed and doesnt work well. Once you sign up for automatic yearly withdraws, beware. There is no way to stop them. There is no place on the app to manage or cancel the subscription. If you try calling the "support" number, they give you the run around and ultimately dont help either. Contacting Apple didnt help either, they said it was beyond their control. After two years trying to cancel this subscription, they are still taking out 20 bucks outta my account once a year. Beware

Incompatibility

The issues arent compatible with the app. They are unreadable as a consequence. Do not subscribe to The Nation through this app. I really enjoy this magazine, but this app is awful.

Dont buy through iTunes

You can only read the magazine articles with the app. Digital articles published by the Nation are not available to you and you will not have an account with the Nation through iTunes. Get your subscription through the web directly from the Nation instead.
